Tokyos Yasukuni Shrine and Meiji Shrine are among the prominent shrines which have the Imperial Seal on the gates or doors. The bow of the battleship, Mikasa, also bears this crest. A golden emblem with 16 single petals of chrysanthemum is inscribed on the front cover of Japanese passports.
The word chrysanthemum is derived from the Greek word chrysous (golden) and anthemon (flower). It was introduced to Japan from China during the 8th century AD, due to its medicinal properties and symbolic association with longevity and nobility, and as a garden plant.
In autumn, there is a National Chrysanthemum Day which is also known as the Festival of Happiness. From October to November, chrysanthemum exhibitions are held at famous gardens, temples and shrines throughout Japan.
The biggest festival is Nihonmatsu no Kiku Ningyo (Nihonmatsu Chrysanthemum Dolls), held annually on the grounds of the Kasumiga Castle in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima prefecture. It ran from Oct 15 to Nov 13 this year. In view of the March 11 disasters and to support Nihonmatsus heritage, donations were collected instead of admission fees.
