It was close to midnight on a Monday in late October. I should have shut the computer down and headed to bed. My daughters would be awake before long. Tomorrow was a workday-conference calls starting at nine. But as usual, I allowed my night owl ways to take over. I decided to check email and Facebook one last time while the Ambien kicked in.
There it was, staring at me from my inbox-a message from Ray Larkin, my childhood friend from Dublin.
"Mama passed away in her sleep @5:55 am today. She has no more pain. We will miss her everyday," he wrote.
His mother, Olive Larkin, had died three hours earlier in a hospice bed, her body claimed by cancer. She had smoked all of her adult life and the cancer detected in her lungs two months earlier had already metastasized into five or six inoperable brain tumors. Olive didn't have long.
