India's modernist marvel

Is Chandigarh unique? There can't be too many cities in the world that have been designed from scratch to resemble a living organism, complete with head, heart, limbs and circulatory system. Le Corbusier, the Swiss-born modernist architect who was hired to design Chandigarh in 1950, is often described as a visionary, yet the north Indian city is also a tribute to his eccentricity.

Chandigarh's regimented grid layout, comprising numbered rectangular “superblocks” measuring 800m wide by 1,200m long, contrasts sharply with the chaotic feel of India's traditional urban destinations.

Dominated by Brutalist concrete architecture, Chandigarh is a place that is likely to alienate some new arrivals. But it's also a clean, green city and for anyone with an interest in modern architecture, it's a must-see. The city's domestic airport is currently being developed, and will soon have an international terminal. More pertinently, the launch this winter of BMI's new direct flights from Heathrow to Amritsar, just 200km away to the north-west of the Punjab region, puts the city within easier reach of UK tourists.

Interview with Henry Rollins: Punk Rock World Traveler

Rom his early days fronting the legendary punk rock group Black Flag to his politically charged spoken-word performances, Henry Rollins has earned a reputation for his outspoken, take-no-prisoners style. Now he has published a powerful book, Occupants , which reflects the same approach to travel photography. It features images—sometimes beautiful, sometimes disturbing—taken by Rollins in troubled and hard-to-reach places around the world, including Afghanistan, Iraq, North Korea, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia. Rollins’ reflective and often stream-of-consciousness writing accompanies each photo. It turns out that Rollins is a hardcore traveler and a serious reader of writing about the world: He’s a big fan of the late Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski , for example, whose books represent “some of the best writing I’ve ever encountered.” I called Rollins this week to ask him about his own book and travels.

Blazing Monkey Blog: Home Repair - Advice On Fixing A Tap That Is ...

Everyone has, or will in the future, experienced a leaking tap in their home. This can be a really annoying issue, as it causes a steady dripping sound. It will also cost you a lot of money when it comes to wasting water. Some people may feel that they need to call a handyman to do the job for them, but it is actually quite simple to fix the tap on your own. Here are the steps you should follow.

Turn off the water supply first. The valve that shuts the water supply off should be located underneath the sink. After closing the valve turn on the tap to make sure that the water has actually been turned off. There should be no water flowing through the open tap at this point. Cover the sink drain. This will prevent the loss of any of the important screws and small parts that go with the faucet from heading down the drain.
