Jim Lapsley is unlikely to ever leave his passport at home again after the oversight cost the Templeton-based professional golfer a trifecta of titles on the Australian PGA's Legends Tour.
The 58-year-old, who recently returned to Canterbury after a lengthy stint in Queenstown, won the tour's E-Z-GO Player of The Year gong and the title for most wins, but missed out on the Order of Merit title by just $45.84.
He played 49 of the tour's 55 tournaments – winning eight – and said any number of missed putts, a shot out of bounds or a dreaded three-putt could have been the difference.
He won $40,134.66, winner Ken Tarling won $40,180.50.
"Over 50-odd tournaments and more than 60 rounds of golf, it probably did come down to one shot," he said.
And while that's all true, missing a tournament in South Australia because he left his passport at home was the real clincher.
"We were living in Queenstown and drove up here [Christchurch] to fly out, but realised at the airport we'd left our passports at home.
