ABC correspondent tells IPFW students of her passion for war reporting

ABC senior foreign affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz never imagined growing up that she would be covering wars or that her passport would be the type to make custom agents' eyes roll.

Or that images of soldiers, civilians and their families would keep her up at night.

“Every country that has been troubled in the last decade, I've traveled there,” she said, addressing two classes of students during her visit to IPFW on Tuesday.

As the November speaker in the IPFW Omnibus Lecture Series, Raddatz spoke Tuesday evening to the public, as well as to students in communications and writing classes, and gave a news conference.

Raddatz saved most of her time in class to allow students to ask questions, which ranged from politics and President Obama to why she enjoys reporting on such a depressing topic.

“Depressing or not, it's what our country is involved in, and that's why it's important,” she told students.

She said in the later years of the decade, as she reported on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, she tried to focus her stories on human interests, topics she hoped would grab attention. With the tough economy, Americans are less concerned with foreign affairs, she said.

London, Nov 8 (ANI): British Home Secretary Theresa May has admitted that the government will never know how many terrorists and criminals entered the country after border checks were secretly axed.

The UK Borders Agency have been accused of a massive cover-up to hide the number of people let in to the country under a secret relaxation of immigration controls this year.

The Home Secretary admitted that she ordered a 'pilot' scheme to water down passport checks in July for Britons and other EU nationals without informing Parliament.

Senior Home Office sources conceded May agreed to extend the pilot scheme in September, without knowing whether it was working properly or not.

According to the Daily Mail, up to five million foreign nationals may have entered the UK during the downgrade, which applied at every port and airport. It will never be known how many were illegals.
